The Centre for Research in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CRASSH) at the University of Cambridge invites applications for its prestigious Visiting Fellowships for the 2026/2027 academic year. Programme Overview
The Visiting Fellowship provides scholars with dedicated time and space to advance their research while contributing to the vibrant academic life at CRASSH. Fellows will join a collaborative network of researchers, participate in seminars and workshops, and contribute to emerging debates across the arts, humanities, and social sciences.
The in-person fellowship lasts a minimum of nine weeks, with the possibility of extending up to twelve weeks, followed by a nine-month virtual affiliation. This structure allows fellows to begin collaborations in Cambridge and continue them remotely, ensuring long-term engagement and meaningful academic exchange.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must be employed on at least a 50% contract at a higher education or research institution located in a country categorized within the Global South. Scholars must hold a PhD that was awarded at least five years before the application deadline. Strong proficiency in spoken English is essential, as fellows are expected to participate actively in academic discussions, seminars, and collaborative projects.
The programme welcomes researchers working in any disciplinary area connected to the arts, humanities, or social sciences. Applicants should demonstrate a clear research agenda that would benefit from the fellowship period and align with CRASSH’s ethos of interdisciplinary inquiry.
Fellowship Benefits
Selected fellows receive comprehensive support to facilitate their stay in Cambridge. Benefits include:
- Travel Support: Return economy airfare from the fellow’s country of residence to the United Kingdom, with visa-related expenses covered where necessary.
- Accommodation: Single en-suite accommodation at Wolfson College, providing access to college facilities such as the library, gymnasium, and social spaces.
- Subsistence Allowance: A weekly stipend of £175 to help cover living expenses, including meals and local transportation.
- Academic Resources: Dedicated workspace, computer access, and full access to the University of Cambridge’s extensive library network, including specialist collections.
- Community Integration: Opportunities to attend and contribute to lectures, workshops, reading groups, and academic events hosted by CRASSH.
For fellows wishing to bring dependents, additional arrangements may be possible; however, any associated costs must be borne by the fellow. Standard accommodation provided by the programme is intended for single occupancy, and requests for alternative arrangements depend on availability.
Fellowship Expectations
Throughout their stay, fellows are expected to contribute to the intellectual life of CRASSH. This includes participating in the Research Practice Seminar Series and collaborating with other fellows to develop, plan, and deliver an academic event related to a shared research theme. Fellows must remain in Cambridge for the duration of the residency, aside from a limited allowance of up to one week away, during which the subsistence allowance is paused.
Prior to arrival, fellows will collaborate remotely to prepare for the planned academic event. Successful applicants will be required to secure travel and make visa arrangements well in advance. Travel insurance is mandatory and must be arranged independently.
