The Deutsche Welle International Journalism Traineeship offers an exceptional 18-month paid training opportunity for emerging journalists from around the world. Designed to nurture talent in global reporting, the program equips participants with cutting-edge multimedia skills and a strong understanding of international journalism practices.
Program Structure
The traineeship combines academic learning, newsroom experience, and hands-on reporting opportunities across DW’s platforms.
1. Seminar and Workshop Phase (6 months)
Participants engage in practice-oriented sessions covering areas such as multimedia storytelling, investigative journalism, data analysis, digital news production, and on-camera presentation. Training takes place in both English and German, preparing candidates for a multilingual media environment.
2. Rotational Editorial Experience (9 months)
Trainees rotate through different DW departments in Bonn, Berlin, and selected international bureaus. This phase offers exposure to TV, radio, and digital production, encouraging versatility and collaboration within diverse editorial teams.
3. Elective Internship (1 month)
Participants choose a focus area aligned with their career interests, gaining specialized experience and developing a professional portfolio of published work.
Eligibility Requirements
Candidates should demonstrate a genuine passion for journalism and meet the following criteria:
- Language Proficiency:
- Strong command of English and good working knowledge of German, or
- Native proficiency in German with excellent English skills, or
- Native speaker of one of DW’s broadcasting languages with strong English and intermediate German.
- Educational Background:
- A university degree, vocational qualification, or equivalent professional training.
- Preferred fields include technology, science, politics, economics, or law, though candidates from diverse academic or creative backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
- Experience and Skills:
- Previous experience in journalism or media production.
- Strong digital literacy and familiarity with social media platforms.
- Creativity, adaptability, and the ability to perform under deadlines in fast-paced newsroom settings.
