About the Programme
The Graduate-In-Training Programme is an intensive, structured three-year developmental initiative that aims to prepare graduates for professional careers in engineering, data science, and technology management within the astronomy and broader scientific research sectors. Through hands-on learning, participants will engage in complex and high-impact projects that support the operations and development of world-leading radio astronomy instruments, including the MeerKAT telescope and the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project.
The programme begins in March 2026 and offers placements at SARAO facilities located in Cape Town, the Northern Cape (Losberg site), and HartRAO (Hartebeesthoek). Each participant will be assigned to a specific technical area and mentored by experienced professionals who guide them in applying theoretical knowledge to real-world challenges. This mentorship structure ensures continuous learning, professional growth, and exposure to multidisciplinary work environments.
Programme Objectives
The primary goal of the GIT Programme is to cultivate the next generation of scientists, engineers, and technology leaders who will contribute to South Africa’s growing role in global radio astronomy and innovation. Participants will:
- Gain practical experience through direct involvement in live engineering and scientific projects.

Eligibility Criteria
The programme welcomes applications from candidates who have completed or are in their final year of study in the following fields:
- BEng or BScEng in Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical, Mechatronic, or Civil Engineering
- BEng or BScEng in Computer Engineering or a BSc(Hons) in Computer Science
- BTech or BEng in Civil Engineering
- MSc in Electronics, Radio-Frequency Engineering, or Antenna Systems
