Call for Proposals: Artificial Intelligence for Canadian Energy Innovation 2026

The Government of Canada has launched the Artificial Intelligence for Canadian Energy Innovation 2026 program, a strategic initiative designed to advance the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in transforming the country’s energy sector. This call for proposals invites organizations to submit innovative projects that apply AI technologies to accelerate research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) in clean energy while reducing costs and environmental impacts.

Purpose of the Program

Canada’s energy landscape is undergoing rapid transformation, driven by the global demand for sustainable solutions and the urgent need to reduce carbon emissions. The program aims to harness the potential of AI to support this transition by enhancing innovation, efficiency, and data management across the energy ecosystem. It seeks to encourage collaboration between AI experts, researchers, and energy innovators to develop intelligent solutions that improve decision-making, optimize processes, and accelerate the commercialization of advanced energy technologies.

Key Objectives

The core objectives of the program include:

  1. Accelerating Innovation: To employ AI tools that reduce the cost, duration, and energy consumption involved in developing and testing new energy technologies.
  2. Fostering Collaboration: To build partnerships between the AI sector and energy technology developers, enabling cross-disciplinary expertise that leads to practical, scalable solutions.
  3. Enhancing Data Accessibility: To improve the availability, security, and use of Canadian energy data, ensuring that researchers and innovators can leverage data-driven insights for technological progress.
Funding Details

The Artificial Intelligence for Canadian Energy Innovation 2026 program offers substantial financial support to successful applicants. Recipients may receive up to 75 percent of total eligible project costs, with funding amounts ranging from CAD 500,000 to CAD 1.5 million. The project funding period runs from April 1, 2026, to March 31, 2030, providing recipients with adequate time to develop, test, and demonstrate the effectiveness of their proposed AI solutions.

Projects are expected to produce measurable outcomes that contribute to cleaner, smarter, and more efficient energy systems. The funding is intended to catalyze innovation and attract additional investments from industry and research partners, helping Canada strengthen its leadership in clean energy technologies.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible applicants include organizations incorporated or registered in Canada such as:

  • For-profit and not-for-profit organizations
  • Academic and research institutions
  • Community and regional organizations
  • Provincial, territorial, or municipal governments and their agencies
  • Indigenous governments, communities, or majority-owned businesses

Each project must demonstrate clear alignment with the program’s goals and must involve collaboration between AI developers and energy innovators.

Project Requirements

To qualify for funding, proposed projects must apply an AI solution to a pre-commercial energy technology with a technology readiness level (TRL) between 2 and 6. The project should aim to advance the technology by at least one TRL stage. Applicants must also ensure that the AI application is innovative, either entirely new or a significantly improved adaptation of an existing solution, and that it provides tangible benefits such as cost reduction, efficiency gains, or accelerated development timelines.

Projects should have access to relevant data sets or a concrete plan for generating data during the project. Demonstrating responsible data management and cybersecurity practices will also be essential.

Application Process

The application process follows a two-stage format:

  1. Expression of Interest (EOI): Applicants must first submit an EOI outlining their proposed project, objectives, expected outcomes, and partnerships. This stage serves to screen proposals for eligibility and alignment with program goals.
  2. Full Project Proposal (FPP): Shortlisted applicants will be invited to submit a detailed proposal, including technical descriptions, financial plans, timelines, and measurable impacts.

The deadline for submitting the Expression of Interest is 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time on December 4, 2025. Applications will be evaluated based on innovation potential, technical feasibility, impact on Canada’s energy sector, and strength of partnerships.

How to Apply

Interested applicants must complete the EOI through the official online application portal managed by Natural Resources Canada. Detailed application guidelines, templates, and evaluation criteria are available through the government’s official channels.

Conclusion

The Artificial Intelligence for Canadian Energy Innovation 2026 initiative represents a critical step toward modernizing Canada’s energy system through cutting-edge AI technologies. By supporting collaborative research and practical innovation, the program aims to make Canada’s energy sector more efficient, sustainable, and globally competitive. This call offers a valuable opportunity for organizations to contribute to the nation’s clean energy transition while positioning themselves at the forefront of technological advancement.
