Mauritius–Africa Scholarship Scheme 2026 – Fully Funded Opportunity

The Government of Mauritius is offering a prestigious, fully funded scholarship program for citizens of African Union and African Commonwealth countries. This scheme supports full-time, on-campus studies at public higher education institutions in Mauritius, covering diploma, undergraduate degree, MPhil, and PhD programs.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must be citizens of recognized African Union or African Commonwealth member countries. They must have already applied for full-time, on-campus admission at a public higher education institution in Mauritius for the upcoming academic year.

Age restrictions depend on the level of study:

  • Undergraduate (Diploma or Degree): Candidates must be over 18 but not yet 26 by January 1, 2027.
  • MPhil / MPhil-PhD / PhD: Candidates must be under 40 by January 1, 2027.

Postgraduate research applicants are typically required to hold a relevant degree with strong academic performance. MPhil candidates usually need an upper-second-class undergraduate degree, while PhD candidates are expected to hold a master’s degree or equivalent and provide a proposed research plan or supervisor endorsement.

Scholarship Benefits

The Mauritius–Africa Scholarship Scheme is designed to remove financial barriers to studying in Mauritius. Benefits include:

  • Full tuition fee coverage.
  • A living allowance to help cover daily expenses.
  • Economy-class return airfare from the student’s home country to Mauritius and back upon program completion.
  • Access to basic health care in public hospitals while in Mauritius.

Students are generally responsible for arranging their own accommodation, although guidance is provided by the institutions.

Duration of Funding

The scholarship provides support for a set maximum period or the minimum duration of the program, whichever is shorter. Typical durations include:

  • Diploma (Undergraduate): Up to 3 years
  • Bachelor’s Degree: Up to 4 years
  • MPhil: 2 years plus 6 months for thesis defense
  • MPhil/PhD combined: Approximately 4 years, including research and defense
  • PhD: Around 3 years plus 6 months for defense

How to Apply

  1. Apply to a Mauritian Institution: Candidates must first apply for admission to a full-time, on-campus program at a public higher education institution in Mauritius.
  2. Complete the Scholarship Application: The official scholarship form must be completed electronically and printed for submission.
  3. Use a Nominating Agency: Applications cannot be submitted directly by students. They must be sent through an official nominating agency in the applicant’s home country, usually a Ministry of Education. The agency reviews and endorses the application before forwarding it to the Mauritian Ministry.
  4. Submission Limits: Each nominating agency can endorse a limited number of candidates, typically up to fifteen, distributed across undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
  5. Final Submission: Endorsed applications, including all required documentation, are submitted to the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Science, and Technology in Mauritius for the final decision.

Required Documentation

Applicants must submit supporting documents, including:

  • A completed and signed scholarship application form
  • Certified academic transcripts and certificates
  • A certified copy of the passport biodata page
  • Birth certificate or equivalent
  • For postgraduate candidates: a detailed research proposal and supporting statement from a potential supervisor
  • Medical certificate issued by a registered practitioner

Important Notes

  • Final selection rests with the Government of Mauritius, and endorsement does not guarantee a scholarship.
  • The government may decide not to award scholarships if the pool of candidates is insufficient or does not meet program priorities.
  • Priority may be given to programs that align with Mauritius’ national development goals, such as technical and hospitality-focused courses.
  • Selected students must comply with visa and immigration requirements and undergo any necessary medical checks.

This scholarship provides a remarkable opportunity for African students to pursue higher education in Mauritius with comprehensive financial support. It encourages academic growth, cross-continental collaboration, and the development of skills aligned with Mauritius’ economic and social priorities.
