- Limited support for fieldwork activities where strongly justified
- Maintenance or repair of existing research equipment
The grant does not cover salaries for principal investigators, fuel costs, consultant fees, general travel expenses, personal computing devices, laboratory animals, drones, or unrelated institutional overheads.
Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for the TWAS SG-NAPI 2026, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be a national of an African country identified by TWAS as lagging in science and technology
- Be 40 years old or younger at the time of application
- Have obtained a PhD degree within the last five years from an institution located outside their home country
- Have returned to their home country within the past 36 months, or formally commit to returning before the end of 2026
- Hold, or have secured, a research or academic position at a university or recognized research institution in their home country
- Conduct the proposed research within their home country
- Not hold an active TWAS or OWSD early-career fellowship during the application period
- Submit a high-quality research proposal that demonstrates originality, feasibility, and potential impact
Women scientists and applicants based in Least Developed Countries (LDCs) are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants may submit only one proposal to TWAS or OWSD funding programmes within a calendar year.
