Award Categories
Applicants may submit one published journalistic work under one of the following categories:
1. Women and/or Youth
This category recognises reporting that focuses on the lives, challenges, achievements, and contributions of women and young people in Africa. Topics may include leadership, education, health, innovation, social inclusion, rights, empowerment, and youth-driven change.
2. Arts, Culture, Heritage and Sports
This category celebrates journalism that documents Africa’s cultural wealth and creative expression. Eligible stories may explore traditional and contemporary arts, cultural heritage, creative industries, sports, identity, and the social or economic impact of culture and creativity.
Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for the Open the Knowledge Journalism Awards 2026, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Applicants must be African journalists who are citizens of an African country and primarily reside on the African continent.
- Submissions must focus on Africa-related topics relevant to one of the award categories.
- The submitted work must have been published between January and December 2025.
- Entries must be the applicant’s original journalistic work and demonstrate strong editorial standards.
- Articles must be published in English or French. Submissions in French must include an English translation.
- The published work must be publicly accessible for review.
- Only one entry per applicant is permitted.
- Submissions must adhere to ethical journalism practices, including accuracy, fairness, and responsible sourcing.
Selection Criteria
Entries will be reviewed by an independent panel of media and knowledge experts. Submissions will be assessed based on:
