Intron Voice AI
Applications are open for the Sahara CodeSwitch Africa Challenge 2026, a technology competition inviting developers, researchers, startups, product teams, students, and other builders to create practical voice AI applications designed for Africa's multilingual environment.
The challenge focuses on code-switching, where speakers naturally move between languages during the same conversation. Participants will use Sahara's code-switching APIs to build real-world applications, test their performance, and compare their solutions against other speech models.
The total cash prize pool is USD 10,000, with additional opportunities for finalists to gain visibility, access partner networks, receive Sahara API credits, and explore potential pilot or deployment opportunities.
The challenge is organized around the idea that voice AI should work effectively with the way people actually communicate across Africa. Many African speakers naturally combine English, French, or other languages with local languages in everyday conversations.
Participants are therefore challenged to build voice AI solutions that can understand code-switched speech and then perform a useful downstream task. Examples include voice assistants, spoken-language forms, health tools, customer-service applications, and other systems that can take action based on spoken input.
The competition is supported by Intron and partners including NVIDIA, CLEAR Global, Masakhane, Wema Bank, Branch, ARM, Gooey.AI, Co-creation Hub, PATH, and turn.io.
Participants can develop solutions in one of five broad areas:
Solutions may address clinical documentation, patient intake, maternal health, public health, community health, hospital workflows, or frontline healthcare.
This track covers applications such as court transcription, legal assistance, citizen services, civic reporting, complaints, justice access, and public-sector workflows.
Participants can develop voice banking, KYC, payments, collections, customer support, call-center, agent-assistance, or customer-insight solutions.
Projects may focus on farmer advisory services, agricultural extension, tutoring, classroom learning, local-language education, or skills development.
Other meaningful applications are welcome, including humanitarian response, accessibility, media, commerce, transportation, culture, and other areas where code-switching voice AI can create measurable value.
The Sahara CodeSwitch Africa Challenge offers a total cash prize pool of USD 10,000.
In addition to the cash awards, top-performing teams may receive:
The challenge is open to:
Applicants can participate individually or as part of a team. The organizers particularly encourage teams with expertise spanning development, research, product design, linguistics, healthcare, customer support, field operations, and other relevant disciplines.
Each submission must meet several core requirements.
First, the solution must use voice to perform a downstream task. Simply converting speech into text is not sufficient.
Second, participants must benchmark their solution using code-switched audio across at least three speech models. This must include an Intron Sahara API as well as at least two other models selected by the participant.
Third, the project should target a specific vertical or real-world use case.
Where possible and permitted, participants should also provide code-switched audio samples used during testing together with basic information such as language pair, domain, accent or country, device type, and noise conditions.
