Applications are now open for the University of Vechta PhD Scholarships 2027 in Germany. The programme offers up to three fully funded doctoral scholarships for outstanding researchers interested in exploring the social justice dimensions of sustainability-oriented transformation processes in rural areas.
The scholarships are offered through the doctoral college titled “Justice Dimensions of Sustainability-Oriented Transformation Processes in Rural Areas (PK 060)” and are supported by the Hans Böckler Foundation. The doctoral college is hosted by the Vechta Institute of Sustainability Transformation in Rural Areas (VISTRA) at the University of
.
Successful candidates will have the opportunity to pursue doctoral research in an interdisciplinary environment while receiving financial support for up to three years. The programme brings together researchers working across sustainability science, human geography, ethics, economics, psychology, and the social sciences to investigate how major environmental and technological transformations affect different communities.
Sustainability-oriented transformation is increasingly influencing communities around the world. Governments, businesses, and societies are pursuing transitions involving renewable energy, climate neutrality, environmental protection, digitalization, and sustainable economic development.
However, these transformations do not affect everyone equally. Changes in energy systems, agricultural practices, technologies, environmental policies, and economic structures can create both opportunities and challenges for different social groups.
The University of Vechta doctoral college focuses on these social and justice-related dimensions of transformation. Researchers will investigate how communities experience sustainability transitions, how justice is understood and negotiated, and how policies can promote fairer and more inclusive outcomes.
