Applications are now open for the ICGEB South African Women in Biotechnology Programme (SAWBP) PhD Fellowship 2027, a fully funded doctoral fellowship that supports outstanding South African women pursuing PhD research in biotechnology at the ICGEB Cape Town Component. The fellowship is delivered through a partnership between the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) and the South African Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI).

The programme was established to strengthen the participation and leadership of women in biotechnology research while promoting scientific excellence and innovation. About the Fellowship

The South African Women in Biotechnology Programme (SAWBP) was created to promote gender equity in scientific research by supporting talented women pursuing advanced biotechnology training. Successful fellows will enroll in a three-year PhD programme hosted at the ICGEB Cape Town Component. Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

• Be female.
• Be a South African citizen or South African permanent resident with a valid South African ID number.
• Intend to pursue a PhD in Biotechnology at the ICGEB Cape Town Component.
• Hold an MSc degree or provide confirmation from their supervisor that their MSc thesis will be submitted before the fellowship commences.
• Obtain a letter of endorsement from an ICGEB Cape Town Group Leader.
