Applications are now open for the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships 2027/2028, a fully funded scholarship opportunity for talented and motivated candidates from eligible low and middle income Commonwealth countries to undertake full time taught Master’s study at a university in the United Kingdom.
Funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships are designed for individuals who have the academic potential to make a positive contribution to development in their home countries but who would not otherwise be able to afford to study in the UK.
The scholarship provides comprehensive financial support, including approved international travel, full tuition fees, a monthly living allowance, and a study travel grant. Eligible scholars with children may also receive family allowances under the applicable conditions.
The programme offers an opportunity for talented graduates to gain advanced academic knowledge and professional skills in the UK while preparing to contribute to sustainable development in their home countries.
The Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships are intended for candidates from eligible low and middle income Commonwealth countries who demonstrate strong academic potential and a clear commitment to development.
The programme supports full time taught Master’s study at eligible UK universities. Applicants are expected to demonstrate how their proposed programme of study will contribute to their future work and development impact in their home countries.
The scholarship is particularly valuable for candidates who have the academic ability to pursue postgraduate study but face financial barriers to studying in the United Kingdom.
Successful Commonwealth Master’s Scholars will receive:
• Full approved tuition fees at the UK university.
• Approved airfare from the scholar’s home country to the UK.
• Approved return airfare to the scholar’s home country at the end of the award.
• A monthly living allowance of £1,712.
• A monthly living allowance of £2,000 for scholars studying at universities in the London metropolitan area.
• A study travel grant to support approved study related travel within the UK or overseas.
• Child allowance for eligible scholars who are widowed, divorced, or single parents.
• Monthly child support of £622 for the first child and £154 for the second and third child under the age of 16, subject to the applicable conditions.
• The opportunity to pursue a fully funded Master’s degree at a UK university.
• Opportunities to develop advanced academic and professional skills.
• Opportunities to build international academic and professional networks.
To be considered for the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships 2027/2028, applicants must:
• Be a citizen of or have been granted refugee status by an eligible Commonwealth country, or be a British Protected Person.
• Be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country.
• Be available to begin academic studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in September 2027.
• By September 2027, hold a first degree of at least upper second class honours standard, normally equivalent to a UK 2:1.
• Applicants with a lower second class degree may be considered if they also hold a relevant postgraduate qualification, usually a Master’s degree.
• Demonstrate that they would be unable to afford to study in the UK without the scholarship.
• Provide all required supporting documentation in the specified format.
Applicants will be asked to provide:
• Details of all undergraduate and postgraduate university qualifications obtained.
• Information about employment history.
• An explanation of how previous employment experience supports and relates to the programme they intend to study in the UK.
• Details of up to 10 publications and prizes, where applicable.
• Names and positions of three referees who can comment on the applicant’s ability to benefit from the scholarship and their potential to deliver development impact after completing their studies.
• At least two references included with the application.
• A Development Impact statement covering the required areas.
• Supporting documentation in the required format.
Applicants should prepare their academic, professional, and development impact information carefully before submitting the application.
Applications for the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships are considered according to:
• Candidate merit, including academic experience.
• The quality of the proposed programme and study plan.
• The potential development impact of the scholarship.
• The applicant’s potential contribution to the development of their home country.
• The relevance of the applicant’s academic and professional experience to the proposed programme.
• The applicant’s ability to benefit from postgraduate study in the UK.
