The fellowship is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Health through the Global Health Protection Programme and implemented through a consortium comprising the Africa Field Epidemiology Network, Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine, Robert Koch Institute and Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute.outbreak

The programme runs for approximately 1.5 years and combines in person workshops, distance based learning, self study eLearning modules, simulations and the development of practical teaching case studies. Fellows will participate in workshops in Hamburg, Accra and Kampala while applying their learning within their home institutions.

About the Fellowship

The FOR GHP Fellowship uses a multiplier approach to build a stronger public health workforce capable of responding to natural and intentional disease outbreaks. The programme aims to equip professionals with practical competencies that can be transferred to colleagues and institutions in their home countries.

Training covers outbreak management, One Health, global health security, infectious disease surveillance, public health intelligence, emergency preparedness, adult learning, communication, leadership and systems thinking.

The programme also encourages fellows to develop and implement context specific teaching case studies at their home institutions. This allows participants to become facilitators, trainers and institutional multipliers who can contribute to stronger preparedness beyond their own professional development.

The fellowship includes seven eLearning modules as part of the selection process, followed by three major in person workshops. The first workshop will take place in Hamburg, Germany, from April 12 to 17, 2027. The second workshop will take place in Accra, Ghana, from October 11 to 15, 2027. The final workshop will take place in Kampala, Uganda, from July 3 to 7, 2028.

Successful participants will receive a certificate and 10 European Credit Transfer System points from the University of Basel upon completion of the programme.
