The Leibniz Institute for Educational Media | Georg Eckert Institute (GEI) invites applications for the Georg Arnhold Senior Fellowship 2027, an esteemed program designed to advance global dialogue on education for sustainable peace. Purpose of the Fellowship

The Georg Arnhold Senior Fellowship aims to foster innovative scholarship and practical insights in the field of peace education. It provides a platform for outstanding professionals to explore how education can contribute to long-term peacebuilding and reconciliation. The program seeks to bridge academic research with real-world applications, equipping educators, policymakers, and civil society organizations with tools to promote mutual understanding, tolerance, and conflict resolution through education.

The Fellow will be expected to undertake a research project that contributes to the broader mission of the Georg Arnhold Program transforming educational systems and media into vehicles for sustainable peace. The results of this work should inspire meaningful change in both educational practice and public policy.

Fellowship Benefits

The selected Fellow will spend up to six months in residence at the Georg Eckert Institute in Braunschweig, Germany. In exceptional cases, a minimum stay of three months may be considered. The fellowship provides:

  • A monthly stipend of €3,300 to support living expenses during the stay in Germany.
  • Economy-class airfare for a round trip between the Fellow’s home country and Germany.
  • Administrative, academic, and publication support from GEI program coordinators.
  • Access to world-class research facilities, a vibrant academic network, and collaboration opportunities with leading scholars in peace and educational studies.
Eligibility Criteria

Applications are open to both distinguished scholars and experienced practitioners in fields related to peace education.

  • For scholars: Applicants should hold advanced degrees and demonstrate a solid record of research in the humanities, education, law, or social and political sciences. Their proposed projects should contribute to understanding how education, particularly through media and curricula, can foster peace and social cohesion.
  • For practitioners: Journalists, educators, policymakers, and NGO leaders with substantial professional experience in peacebuilding or human rights are strongly encouraged to apply.

All applicants should have at least five years of relevant experience in peace education, strong communication skills, and an excellent command of English.

Responsibilities of the Fellow

During the fellowship, the selected individual will:

  • Conduct a significant research project in the field of education for sustainable peace.
  • Participate in and contribute to the Institute’s research colloquia and discussions.
  • Collaborate with the Program Coordinator in designing and organizing the annual international conference on peace education.
  • Publish their research findings in a reputable academic or policy-oriented outlet within one year after completing the fellowship.
  • Manage their own visa, health insurance, and other logistical arrangements related to the stay in Germany.
Application and Selection Process

The selection process is rigorous and merit-based, comprising five main stages:

  1. Online Application: Applicants must submit a brief summary (up to 1,000 words) outlining their proposed project and its relevance to peace education.
  2. Pre-Selection: The GEI review team conducts an initial assessment to shortlist up to ten promising candidates.
  3. Shortlisting: The Academic Advisory Board selects the top three candidates based on project quality and relevance.
  4. Full Proposal Submission: Shortlisted candidates are invited to submit a detailed research proposal (up to 25 pages), along with a curriculum vitae and publication list.
  5. Final Interview: The final candidates participate in an online interview with the Advisory Board, which makes the final selection.
Evaluation Criteria

Applications will be assessed based on the originality, feasibility, and scholarly contribution of the proposed project. The committee also considers the applicant’s experience, ability to bridge theory and practice, and potential to influence peace education at both policy and community levels.

Duration and Deadline

The fellowship typically runs for a period of six months between January and June 2027. All applications must be submitted by November 14, 2025.
