Applications are now open for the Nordic Scholarship Programme 2027, an opportunity for students and researchers engaged in Africa focused studies to spend one month at the Nordic Africa Institute in Uppsala, Sweden. The programme is designed for researchers working on Africa related topics within the social sciences and humanities and provides dedicated time, resources, and an academic environment to advance an existing research project.
The Nordic Africa Institute established the programme to contribute to the production of knowledge about Africa and strengthen relationships between Nordic research communities. Selected scholars can make use of the Institute’s extensive library collections on contemporary Africa, connect with NAI research hosts, and work within a professional research environment during their one month stay.
The programme is open to Master’s students, PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and mid career researchers. Applicants may hold any citizenship, but they must be affiliated with and based at a university or research centre in Sweden, Finland, Denmark, or Iceland both when applying and when taking up the scholarship.
The Nordic Scholarship Programme is an annual initiative of the Nordic Africa Institute intended to support Africa focused research within Nordic academic institutions. Rather than providing funding for a complete degree programme, the scholarship gives selected applicants an opportunity to spend one month at the Institute working on a defined part of their existing research project.
During their stay, scholars can use the Nordic Africa Institute’s specialist collections relating to contemporary Africa. These resources include books, periodicals, newspapers, government publications, and other materials that can support research across a wide range of Africa related subjects.
The programme also provides an opportunity to connect with researchers at the Nordic Africa Institute. Applicants are expected to identify how their research relates to the Institute’s work and explain what they intend to accomplish during their stay.
Successful scholars will receive:
• Travel expenses covering the least expensive fare from their residential address in Sweden, Finland, Denmark, or Iceland to Uppsala and return.
• Free accommodation in centrally located housing in Uppsala.
• A desk and computer in a shared office at the Nordic Africa Institute.
• A subsistence allowance of SEK 450 per day.
• Access to the Nordic Africa Institute’s library collections on contemporary Africa.
• Opportunities to connect with NAI research hosts.
• A dedicated one month period to advance an existing research project.
• Opportunities to strengthen connections with Nordic research communities.
• An academic environment for developing Africa focused research.
The scholarship does not include health care insurance or other forms of insurance, so successful applicants are responsible for making appropriate arrangements for their stay.
To be considered for the Nordic Scholarship Programme 2027, applicants must:
• Be pursuing Africa oriented studies or research within the social sciences or humanities.
• Be a Master’s student, PhD candidate, postdoctoral researcher, or mid career researcher.
• Be affiliated with a university or research centre in Sweden, Finland, Denmark, or Iceland.
• Be based at the qualifying university or research centre when applying.
• Remain affiliated with and based at the qualifying institution when taking up the scholarship.
• Be able to develop a clearly defined research project suitable for the one month stay.
• Explain how the proposed stay at the Nordic Africa Institute will contribute to their research.
Applicants may apply regardless of citizenship. Eligibility is based on the required institutional affiliation and location rather than nationality.
Applicants must submit an online application together with:
• An up to date CV.
• A list of publications, if applicable.
• A research project outline of 3 to 5 pages.
• A one page work plan for the period at the Nordic Africa Institute.
• A signed letter of support from the applicant’s supervisor or head of department.
The research project outline should:
• Clearly identify the research topic.
• Contextualize the research within its academic discipline.
• Explain the objectives of the research project.
• Describe the research methodology.
• Explain data gathering techniques where relevant.
• Provide a realistic research timeframe.
• Briefly explain the theoretical basis of the research.
Applications are primarily evaluated based on the quality of the proposed research project.
Applicants should therefore demonstrate:
• A clearly defined and relevant research topic.
• Strong academic framing of the research question.
• A well developed research methodology.
• A realistic research timeframe.
• A clear theoretical foundation.
• A strong connection to Africa focused research.
• A convincing explanation of how the Nordic Africa Institute can support the research.
• A realistic and specific work plan for the one month stay.
• The potential to make effective use of the Institute’s library collections and research environment.
