University of Edinburgh Mastercard Foundation On-Campus Postgraduate Scholarships 2026/2027 (Fully Funded)

The University of Edinburgh, in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, invites applications for its fully funded postgraduate scholarships for the 2026/2027 academic year. This initiative supports exceptional young African leaders who demonstrate academic excellence, a strong commitment to service, and resilience in overcoming barriers to education.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Hold citizenship, residency, or refugee status in an African country, including North Africa.
  • Be academically qualified for admission to a relevant postgraduate programme at the University of Edinburgh (normally equivalent to at least a UK 2:1 Honours degree).
  • Be 35 years old or younger at the start of the programme (born on or after 1 January 1991).
  • Have not previously completed a postgraduate degree (for most on-campus programmes).
  • Provide official academic documents (degree certificate and transcripts) before the deadline.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership skills, community engagement, and a commitment to positive social change, particularly in areas related to climate justice or sustainable development.
  • Show evidence of having faced and overcome significant barriers to accessing higher education, whether social, financial, personal, or health-related.

Applicants from disadvantaged backgrounds, women, individuals with disabilities, and those from refugee or displaced communities are strongly encouraged to apply.

Scholarship Benefits

Successful candidates will receive a comprehensive support package, including:

  • Travel costs to and from Edinburgh
  • A stipend for study materials and daily living
  • Participation in the Climate Leadership Programme
  • Training through the Climate Enterprise School, focusing on sustainable innovation and entrepreneurship

Selection Criteria

Applicants will be assessed on the basis of:

  1. Academic merit – demonstrated ability to meet postgraduate entry standards.

  3. Commitment to climate justice and sustainability – alignment with environmental and social impact goals.
  4. Future contribution – potential to create meaningful change in their home country or region.
