Gulbenkian Institute for Advanced Study (GIAS)
Applications are now open for the Gulbenkian Institute for Advanced Study (GIAS) Scholarships 2027/2028, a fully funded fellowship programme for internationally renowned scholars, researchers, independent academics, and artists. Hosted by the Gulbenkian Institute for Advanced Study in Lisbon, Portugal, the programme offers fellows the opportunity to pursue independent research in a stimulating intellectual environment with minimal administrative or teaching obligations.
The fellowship is designed to support original, high-quality research across a wide range of disciplines. Fellows will spend between three and eight months at GIAS, where they will engage with an international community of scholars while advancing their own research projects.
The Gulbenkian Institute for Advanced Study was established to provide world-class researchers with the time, resources, and environment needed to pursue ambitious research projects. Located in Lisbon, the Institute brings together scholars from different countries, disciplines, and backgrounds to encourage intellectual exchange and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Unlike traditional research appointments, the fellowship places few regular obligations on participants, allowing them to focus primarily on their proposed research while benefiting from interactions with other fellows and the wider academic community.
