World Affairs Councils of America (WACA) Student Scholars Program 2026

Applications are now open for the World Affairs Councils of America (WACA) Student Scholars Program 2026, a fully funded opportunity that enables outstanding undergraduate students to attend the WACA National Conference in Washington, D.C., at no personal cost.

Established in 2010 through the generous support of the Malú and Carlos Alvarez Family, the Student Scholars Program aims to inspire the next generation of leaders in international affairs by providing students with direct exposure to global policy discussions, diplomacy, and career opportunities in world affairs.

Each year, 25 undergraduate students from participating World Affairs Council communities are selected to attend the National Conference. In addition to conference participation, scholars enjoy a special Scholar Day, featuring visits to think tanks, embassies, international organizations, and other institutions shaping global affairs.

About the WACA Student Scholars Program

The WACA Student Scholars Program was created to provide undergraduate students with meaningful exposure to international affairs and foreign policy while helping them explore careers in diplomacy, global development, international business, public policy, journalism, and related fields.

Participants become part of the annual WACA National Conference, where they engage with diplomats, policymakers, academics, business leaders, and international affairs experts. The conference offers opportunities to participate in panel discussions, keynote sessions, networking events, and conversations on today's most pressing global issues.

A highlight of the programme is Scholar Day, an exclusive educational experience in Washington, D.C., where students visit institutions such as think tanks, embassies, and international organizations. These visits provide practical insights into careers in global affairs and help participants connect classroom learning with real-world policy work.

The programme encourages students to broaden their perspectives, build professional networks, and take important next steps in their academic and career journeys.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should meet the following requirements:

• Be an undergraduate student.
• Be affiliated with a participating World Affairs Council community.
• Be nominated through the appropriate Council.
• Demonstrate a strong interest in international affairs, global policy, or related fields.
• Be available to participate in the National Conference in Washington, D.C.
• Complete all programme requirements if selected.

Programme Activities

During the programme, Student Scholars will have opportunities to:

Participant Responsibilities

As part of the programme requirements, selected Student Scholars must:

• Attend the WACA National Conference.

• Submit a short report about their experience within two weeks after the conference.
