France FIAS Fellowships 2027–2028 (Fully Funded)

The France FIAS Fellowships 2027–2028 are highly competitive, fully funded research residencies designed for outstanding international scholars across all academic disciplines. The program is hosted by the French Institutes for Advanced Study (FIAS) and offers researchers the opportunity to conduct independent, high-level research in France while benefiting from world-class academic environments and interdisciplinary collaboration.

This fellowship is particularly attractive for postdoctoral and senior researchers who want to pursue innovative projects in a supportive and intellectually stimulating setting. Fellows are hosted across multiple leading institutes in France and are given full academic freedom to develop their research ideas.

About France FIAS Fellowships 2027–2028

The FIAS Fellowship Programme is an international mobility initiative that brings together researchers from around the world to work in France for a 10-month residential fellowship. The program runs across seven prestigious Institutes for Advanced Study located in Aix-Marseille, Cergy, Loire Valley (Orléans-Tours), Lyon, Montpellier, Nantes, and Paris.

Selected fellows will spend an academic year in residence (September to June), focusing entirely on their research projects without teaching or administrative obligations. The program is designed to promote intellectual freedom, interdisciplinary exchange, and collaboration between international scholars and French research communities.

The 2027–2028 call offers a limited number of fellowships and is part of a long-term initiative aimed at strengthening global academic mobility and research innovation.

Key Benefits of the Fellowship

One of the most attractive features of the FIAS Fellowship is its comprehensive financial and research support package.

Fellows receive a monthly stipend of €2,200, which is intended to cover living expenses throughout their stay in France. In addition to this, the program typically provides accommodation support, travel reimbursement, and access to research facilities within the host institute.

Each fellow also benefits from a dedicated research budget that supports academic activities such as conferences, workshops, and collaborative projects. Social security coverage is included, ensuring full administrative and health protection during the fellowship period.

Beyond financial support, fellows gain access to a highly international academic environment. They are encouraged to engage with researchers from different disciplines, participate in seminars, and collaborate with leading scholars in their field, creating strong opportunities for intellectual exchange and long-term academic partnerships.

Eligibility Criteria

The FIAS Fellowship 2027–2028 is open to researchers from all nationalities and all academic disciplines, although it has a strong focus on the humanities, social sciences, and interdisciplinary research fields.

Applicants must hold a PhD at the time of application. In addition, candidates are generally required to have at least two years of postdoctoral research experience after completing their PhD. The PhD training period is not counted toward this experience requirement.

Researchers must also meet mobility conditions. Applicants should not have spent more than 12 months in France within the three years prior to the application deadline. This rule ensures international diversity and encourages global academic exchange.

Both early-career and senior researchers are eligible, provided they meet the academic and mobility criteria. Strong, original, and interdisciplinary research proposals are highly encouraged.

Application Process

The application process for the FIAS Fellowship is highly competitive and involves multiple stages.

Applicants must first submit an online application during the official call period. The application includes detailed information about the research project, academic background, and motivation for applying.

Once submitted, applications are evaluated by scientific committees composed of international experts. These committees assess the quality, originality, and feasibility of the proposed research projects, as well as the applicant’s academic track record.

Shortlisted candidates may be asked to provide additional clarifications or participate in further evaluation stages depending on the host institute. Final selection is based on academic excellence, research potential, and alignment with the scientific priorities of the hosting institute.

Successful applicants are then matched with one of the French Institutes for Advanced Study, where they will carry out their research during the fellowship period.

Required Documents

Applicants are required to prepare a complete application package, which typically includes:

  • A detailed curriculum vitae (CV) highlighting academic and research experience
  • A full research proposal outlining objectives, methodology, and expected outcomes
  • A motivation statement explaining the relevance of the fellowship to the applicant’s career
  • A list of publications and academic achievements
  • Contact details of referees or letters of recommendation (depending on institute requirements)
  • Any additional supporting documents requested by the host institute

All documents must clearly demonstrate the originality and interdisciplinary value of the proposed research.

Application Deadline

The application deadline for the France FIAS Fellowships 2027–2028 is 15 June 2026.

Applicants are strongly advised to prepare early, as the selection process is highly competitive and requires a strong research proposal and complete documentation. Late or incomplete applications are not considered.
