Overview

Applications are now open for the Pulitzer Center Global South Civil Society Microgrants 2026, a funding opportunity designed to support civil society organizations and community groups across the Global South in using journalism as a tool for civic engagement and community empowerment. Administered by the Pulitzer Center, the programme provides microgrants ranging from US$2,000 to US$4,000 for projects that leverage Pulitzer Center-supported reporting to foster informed public dialogue, strengthen civic participation, and inspire action on pressing environmental and climate-related issues.pulitzer

The initiative recognizes the important role that civil society organizations play in translating quality journalism into meaningful community engagement. Rather than funding journalism or media production itself, the programme supports innovative projects that use existing Pulitzer Center reporting to educate communities, encourage public discussion, and promote evidence-based decision-making. Organizations working in Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia are invited to submit proposals that demonstrate how journalism can be used to create informed and empowered communities.

About the Microgrant

The Global South Civil Society Microgrants were established to strengthen connections between investigative journalism and community action. The programme encourages organizations to use Pulitzer Center-supported stories as the foundation for civic engagement initiatives that improve public understanding of critical global issues while encouraging meaningful participation from local communities.

For the 2026 funding cycle, proposals must focus on one of three key climate and environmental themes:

  • Rainforests: Examining the drivers of rainforest degradation, including the influence of global markets, finance, and public policy, while highlighting the rights and knowledge of Indigenous peoples and local communities.
  • Ocean: Exploring issues affecting ocean health, marine ecosystems, climate change, ocean governance, and science-based or community-led solutions.
  • Climate and Labor: Investigating the intersection of climate change and labor, including livelihoods, gender, adaptation strategies, and community resilience.
